Just found your website. Thanks for noticing us beervendors. Yes, beer vendors are very motivated people. Most, like me, use it as a 2nd job, for the extra money, but still treat it as a hobby. It is for sure the most fun part time job EVER.
There are lots of vendors that have a "gimmick" to sell beer. We have one at Slugger Field in Louisville, that EVERY time he gets a tip, he yells "CHA CHING".
He is a local celebrity. I will have to get some pictures after the season starts.
Thanks again.
Whew! What a day! This past Saturday was "Thunder Over Louisville". It is the kick off to Derby celebrations. It is one of the biggest airshows AND fireworks in the country. estimated crowd was 700,000. We only servred the ones inside the ballpark, about 10,000-15,000.We had a game at 2:00, and the airshow started at 3. Then everyone hangs out at the ballpark for the restrooms and concessions. the weather was GREAT, which helped with the beer sales, of course. getting ready to work Derby in a couple of weeks
We worked the Kentucky Derby this past weekend.Predicated on the weather forecasts, that were calling for the wettest Derby ever, we had a good weekend. I sold beer on Thursday, and did "ok". I thought we would do better, considering it was a beautiful day. On Friday, OAKS DAY, I sold Mint Juleps, and it was a very good day. In case you do not know, Mint Juleps are a tradition at Derby. I do not care for the taste myself. All it is, is a about a shot or two of EARLY TIMES Whiskey and ice, and they stick a piece of mint in it, then we sold it for $10 each. What a deal ? Juleps sell well on Friday, but Saturday, Derby Day, that is when EVERYONE wants them. They are served in a glass, that itself is a collectors item. It is a different design each year and with the names of all the Derby winners listed on it as well. As it gets closer to the Derby race itself, our sales increase. People beg you (almost), to sell them the Juleps you have. One thing that was different this year, was that the prices were a $1 cheaper, if you went into the concourse and bought the drinks yourself. That went for the beer too. When I sold beer on Thursday, the price we sold it for was $5.50 each. In the concourse, they were only $4.50. HOWEVER, on Oaks & Derby beer was $8 each. Nothing like price gouging, huh ? My son Bryan worked as a beer vendor too. 2nd generation beer vendor. He did receive a $108 tip from one group, because he went and got them ALL Miller Lite, and sold them all 24 of them. The total was $192. YES, $192 for 24 beers. So, they gave him $300, and told him to keep the change. You can make some good tips at Churchill Downs, just because you may run into someone that just hit "BIG",and they are willing to share thier good fortunes.
